Kathryn Kinasz, M.D.
About Kathryn
Dr. Kinasz is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in the CalPsychiatry Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices. She specializes in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses that impact children and adolescents including but not limited to mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, and eating disorders. She also sees children struggling with behavioral issues at home or at school and adolescents exploring their gender identity. Dr. Kinasz also sees adults with similar disorders and has a unique interest in women’s mental health including women facing infertility, psychiatric issues in pregnancy and postpartum, and challenges of new motherhood. Dr. Kinasz uses various treatment tools including psychotherapy, psychoeducation, parent and family interventions, and medications to help an individual achieve their personalized goals in treatment.
Dr. Kinasz is certified in family based treatment (FBT) for eating disorders and sees individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, atypical anorexia, and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. She also has advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy through the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Kinasz also received training in infant-parent psychotherapy through the Infant-Parent Program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She has also been a long-term group therapy leader, participated in young child play therapy, and engaged in parent-only focused therapy.
Dr. Kinasz went to medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed her general adult psychiatry residency at the University of California San Francisco where she received an Area of Distinction in Women’s Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry. She served as the Chief Resident at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She completed her child and adolescent fellowship training at Stanford University. Dr. Kinasz has multiple first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals. She is a co-author on the eating disorder chapter in the Dulcan Textbook for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and a first author in the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative’s module on the neuroscience of appetite. Dr. Kinasz has received multiple teaching awards and leadership awards during her psychiatry training.
Dr. Kinasz carefully listens to a person’s unique story and uses an evidenced-based approach to address their individualized needs. Her child and adolescent fellowship training helps her to explore her patients through a lens that considers biological, psychological, and environmental factors that contribute to their symptoms. She believes in addressing the family system in treatment so that the individual and, when applicable, the entire family can achieve psychological healing and growth.
