Effective Collaboration Between Therapists and Psychiatrists and Overview of Psychiatric Medications for Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Marin CAMFT presents Dr. Kathryn Kinasz, MD, and Dr. Josephine McNary, MD, discussing Effective Collaboration Between Therapists and Psychiatrists and Overview of Psychiatric Medications for Mood and Anxiety Disorders.

This presentation addresses how to create meaningful collaboration between psychiatrists and therapists, with an overview on the use of psychiatric medications in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. McNary will use clinical case vignettes to examine ways in which effective and efficient communication between therapists and psychiatrists can improve the quality of care and optimize mental health outcomes for our clients. She will explore how to determine when to reach out to a psychiatrist and common barriers to meaningful communication between psychiatrists and therapists. Dr. Kinasz will discuss when to consider recommending medication, and will also discuss the different types of medication used, their efficacy in treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, and common side effects.

About the speakers:
Kathryn Kinasz, MD
Dr. Kinasz is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in the CalPsychiatry Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices. She received her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, trained at the University of California San Francisco for her general adult psychiatry residency, and completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Stanford University. Dr. Kinasz specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults with mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, women’s mental health related concerns, and eating disorders.

Josephine McNary, MD
Dr. McNary has her B.A./M.A degrees from Stanford University and her M.D. from Tulane University. She is currently attending staff at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, where she provides both inpatient psychiatry and consultation services. At UCLA, she completed residency training and specialty fellowship training in both psycho-oncology and treatment-resistant mood disorders.
