Psych Media Discussion Group – Squid Game

In the next CalPsychiatry Psych Media Discussion Group, we’ll be discussing the popular Netflix series Squid Game. We’ve got a great panel of expert discussants joining us. Grace Jung has a PhD from UCLA in Media Studies.She’s the host of podcast K-Drama School, which analyzes Korean TV dramas and contextualizes it according to its social, cultural and historical significance. Dr. Pam Rutledge is a media psychologist who applies expertise in human behavior and neuroscience to media and technology. She is also the director of the Media Psychology Research Center. Jenny Moon, LCSW is a Korean-American therapist whose mission is to provide culturally sensitive and supportive care for the Asian American and Person of Color experience. She is an anxiety and trauma specialist, who works with high-achieving working professionals addressing intergenerational trauma and family of origin attachment wounds.

About the speakers:
Dr. Pamela Rutledge
Director, Media Psychology Research Center
Faculty, School of Psychology, Fielding Graduate University
Dr. Pamela Rutledge is a media psychologist, integrating her expertise in psychology with 20+
years as a media producer. In her role as Director of the Media Psychology Research Center, Dr.
Rutledge consults with agencies and entertainment companies, such as 20th Century Fox Films,
Warner Bros., and OWN, to develop for audience engagement and branding strategies based on
consumer narratives. She also co-hosts a monthly CyberChat webinar addressing parenting
issues in the digital age.

As faculty of media psychology at Fielding Graduate University, Dr. Rutledge teaches and
researches in the areas related to media experience and narrative meaning. She is particularly
interested in applying positive psychology to media and the impact of media use and content
creation on identity, media behaviors and social trends.
Dr. Rutledge has published both academic and popular work. She is the author of Exploring
Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness and Well-Being, a chapter on positive media
psychology in International Encyclopedia of Media Psychology and papers on the appeal of the
Twilight Saga and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. A contributor to Psychology Today, Dr.
Rutledge is also a frequent expert source on media use and popular culture for media outlets such
as The NY Times, The BBC World and ABC News. She holds a PhD and an MBA.

Grace Jung, PhD
Grace Jung is an internationally-touring stand-up comedian and writer based in Los Angeles. She performs at venues across the US, Europe and Asia including Carolines on Broadway, the Hollywood Improv, the Ice House, Flappers, Laugh Factory, and many more. Grace was named Comic of the Week on the Jackie and Laurie Show. She is the author of Deli Ideology and hosts K-Drama School podcast. Grace has a PhD in Film and Television from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, and specializes in Korean television studies. Grace was in the DC Comedy Festival, Ha Ha Harvest Comedy Festival in Portland, and North Carolina Comedy Festival.
