At our Psych Media Discussion Group on April 12th we were joined by Stephen Joffe, MSW and Dave Beran, a James Beard award-winning chef to discuss the “Fishes” episode of the Hulu series, The Bear (Season 2, Episode 6). Chef Beran trained Jeremy Allen White for his role in The Bear at his Santa Monica Michelin Star French bistro, Pasjoli.

Dave Beran
Dave Beran is the chef/owner of Pasjoli, a French bistro in Santa Monica, California. Prior to moving to California, Beran worked at Alinea and NEXT in Chicago where he received a James Beard Award for Best Chef Great Lakes and was named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs in 2014. Pasjoli has received numerous awards and accolades including being named one of GQ Magazine’s Best New Restaurants in America, one of Esquire Magazine’s Best New Restaurants as well as one of The Top 25 Restaurants in Los Angeles by The New York Times. The restaurant was also a James Beard Award Finalist in 2020 for Best New Restaurant.

Stephen Joffe, MSW
Stephen has a masters degree in clinical social work from Smith College and has been practicing for over 40 years. He was originally trained as a family therapist and actively practiced with an array of clients over these years from children adolescents to families and couples. He spent 24 years of his career as CEO of several agencies for children, adolescents and families in Massachusetts, California and Connecticut. He has had a private practice throughout his career and has been back in full-time private practice for the last 15 years. While he has maintained a license in Maine his practice has evolved to a coaching practice over Zoom throughout the country. His current interests focus on couples, families, divorce, coparenting and individuals in the midst of life transitions from college students to adults.

While in Maine from 2016-2018 he was the creator and host of Food Stories a weekly 1/2 hr live interview program exploring the stories of chefs/owners, bakeries, farmers, brewers, and distillers. He was responsible for 117 live shows on Community Radio in Portland, Maine.
